I wrote an article last year (16 July) about some correspondence between my self and Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim Makkawi, who the FBI lists as Seif al-Adel, the man reports say has been appointed as interim head of AQ (not confirmed yet). Makkawi says he is definitely not al-Adel, and people who have met both men tell me they are two different people. I ran the story about Makkawi's correspondence with at that time, and he kept in touch with me for a while before he stopped. I have 'allergy' now with correspondence that goes through emails - I have not met Makkawi face to face in Islamabad, the place where he claims to be based (I have his phone numbers and home address, but did not go to Pakistan to arrange a meeting with him).
I thought of re-running this story that was published last year in al-Hayat. My colleague at al-Sharq al-Awsat, Mohammed al-Shafi, published today a similar story based on correspondence with Makkawi. It is worth reading (see story below)
